Spencer and George's Garden Party!

Image
We're happy to announce for the second year in a row, we'll be hosting Spencer and George's Garden Party in our backyard! We learned a lot from last year, and this one is going to be even better. The music will be performed by Mike P and Jase (in their only performance of 2014). The food is going to be awesome, with tons of samples from our cook book, which will be selling at the Party. There will be tons of tasty drinks, and lot's of wine, and hope to see everybody there. Please come out, and help us support the Oakville Milton Humane Society. The prizes that have been donated has risen over $4000, but looks to be getting even bigger! Here is the updated list of ticket items and silent auction prizes to be won at the party: Ticket Prizes (1 ticket for $5 or 3 tickets for $10):  -        1 set of 4 Blue Jays tickets – August 27 th  (Wed night) vs. Boston -         1 set of 4 Blue Jays ticket...

The Puppy Experiment Pt.1

Image
The Puppy Experiment Recently we had a sewage backup, and had to have the basement floor redone, so we took this opportunity to redo the basement and create a much larger Foster Space. With a larger foster area we could bring in more animals, give them lots of space, but most importantly, they would have enough space that our resident animals wouldn't have to interact with the fosters and could live in blissful ignorance of their presence. We offered to foster many times since the renovations, but it wasn't until a litter of 6 puppies were dumped on the OMHS, that we finally got our chance to try out the new room. George and Sebastian came in with their 3 other brothers, and a sweet, playful sister, after being "found in a box at the side of the road". The boys looked like Black Labs, and the girl looked like a little German Shepherd so the logical conclusion to jump to was that they were a German Shepherd/Black Lab blend, though there is definitely more ...

Spencer's Garden Party

Image
On August 18, 2013, we held a fundraiser for the Oakville Milton Humane Society in our backyard. The idea was to raise pledges for Spencer, for the OMHS Mutt Strutt. It was the culmination of months of work and planning, and everything turned out perfectly. The fact that we were able to raise $1756.07 was completely mind blowing, and we are so grateful to every single person who generously donated an item, bought tickets, or attended the event. The Before Picture Having never put together any type of fundraiser before, we didn't really know what we were getting ourselves into, and man was it a lot of work, thank goodness we had a ton of help. It was supposed to be just a little gathering, but by the time the event arrived, we had almost 60 people RSVP. The day of the party, the backyard was nicely packed, with everyone in great spirits, and feeling generous. The one thing you can never control in an event like this is the weather, and lucky for us, after a ...

Piebird Bed and Breakfast

Image
Piebird Bed and Breakfast (Nipissing, ON)  Over the May 24 weekend, we had the utmost pleasure of spending two days and nights at Piebird Bed and Breakfast and Farmstay  in Nipissing Ontario. Piebird Bed and Breakfast and Farmstay is run by an amazing couple, Sherry and Yan, each filled with so much love, knowledge and openness, it was a pleasure to be in their company, and we are indebted to them in a big way. We had heard of Piebird years ago at  veg.ca , but had only now, found the time to make the trip. The reason we chose this particular weekend, was to take their How To Grow Your Own Food - Gardening Workshop, something we badly needed because our gardens last year were a total disaster. The How To Grow Your Own Food workshop was a mind-blowing experience, so much learning, and so much information, it was a little overwhelming, but the combination of expert knowledge and the hands-on learning, made it easy to retain all the input Yan relayed to...

Mary Agnes Diaries - Days 1 - 77

Image
Mary Agnes Diaries - Days 1 - 77 "My name is Mary Agnes.   I came into the Oakville Milton Humane Society as a puppy mill mom who had dried up, and therefore became useless to the monsters who kept me captive. Instead of being kissed by the wrong end of a shotgun, I was rescued, and brought to the shelter. I was so nervous, and frightened, and more or less cowered and peed in my bed non-stop for a good couple weeks after my arrival. (Thank goodness my handlers at the shelter had great patience and big hearts).  Though I began to recognize certain people, I was still frightened all the time, and was moved into the Canine Training Office in the hopes that I would become more comfortable. After weeks of forced socialization, I started coming out of my shell, thanks to Mel, Heather S, and the OMHS Animal Care Crew, with a special thanks to Zylkene.  After months hanging out in the C.T. office, and being stared at by strangers day in and day out, I began to ...
