One of the great things that have come out of The Compassion Experiment, has been all the new discoveries. One good decision (see: to become compassionate eaters), has led to so many new and wonderful things, it has been unbelievable. Where are you going with this? Good question! We spent this past weekend in total bliss, at Sugar Ridge Retreat, and had the time of our lives. "We're having, the time of our lives...", kept running through my head, kind of funny, but annoying at the same time. In the end we had a hell of a good time, and can't wait to go back. http://www.sugarridge.ca/ The Cabin: Our cabin had four beds, and windows all around. We had a little heater that was so powerful, a little was a lot. We were warm and cozy, we had a great view out the windows, and were greeted each morning, by a smiling sun. Dear Editor, A friend of mine alerted me to the fact that your magazine's Holiday Gift Guide for 2010 includes a taxidermied piglet bank - made from a real piglet. This is the most grotesque and disturbing thing that I have heard in some time. How do you justify this and rationalize that this should be considered one of the top gifts to give in 2010? Animals endure enough suffering as it is - do you really think that promoting this kind of gift is an ethical thing to do? Animals should be treated with respect and compassion, and this most certainly does neither. I expect that you will receive an onslaught of letters echoing my thoughts and I hope that you do the right thing and retract this immediately - animals are not things, and they should not be treated as such. The Minister of Community Safety has declined to take any action citing that the SPCA is an arms-length agency and he has no jurisdiction. As recently as 3:15 this afternoon MPP Klees spoke with the minister again urging him to use whatever means are necessary to stop the killing of these animals. Klees explained to the minister that veterinarians, members of the public, landowners in the vicinity are offering their facilities to accommodate the segregation of animals that can be saved.
