The Compassion Experiment (Day 67)

Image
The Compassion Experiment: Words Put !nto Action Well, 67 days in, I weighed myself again, and have lost 11 lbs. since we started this crazy journey. For the first time in 4 years, I am now under the 200 lbs. mark, and am only 8 lbs. from my ideal weight (due to my short stature). Not bad, not bad at all. To be honest, one of the tipping points for us towards becoming compassionate eaters, was the opportunity to lose some extra lbs., which I had in grand supply. Now that we're 67 days in, this is no longer what drives us, instead we've become a part of change, and The Compassion Experiment has become more than just words, but actions. Actions that in the past 67 days that have spoken loud. Case in Point: Dear Mic P, Thanks again for sending a letter to your MP asking them to address the flaws in Canada's farm animal transport system. Over 3,200 Canadians have sent letters so far and they're already helping. We've met with several MPs and many of them are supporti...

"Jumbo no like flowers!" The Compassion Experiment: Words Put !nto Action. Today's Parallel's 'Of Wisdom': "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - GHANDI. 10 Reasons To Live A Compassionate Lifestyle: 1. Dairy products have been linked to heart disease, cancer (especially breast cancer), allergies, sinus trouble and migraines. 2. 80-90% of all cancer, cardiovascular disease and other degenerative illnesses can be prevented by converting to a plant based diet. 3. A vegetarian diet can prevent 97% of coronary obstructions. 4. A compassionate lifestyle can reduce your risk of food poisoning. 5. More than 90% of the toxic residues found in food come from animal by-products. 6. Dairy foods create excess mucous in the body, which can host cold and virus germs in the respiratory tract. 7. Meat contains bovine growth hormones, and has caused early sexual maturity in children. (note: 100 years...

The Compassion Experiment: Words Put Into Action Today's Parallel's 'Of Wisdom': "People often say that humans have always eaten animals, as if this is a justification for continuing the practice. According to this logic, we should not try to prevent people from murdering other people, since this has also been done since the earliest of times." Isaac Beshevis Singer This weekend was the official beginning to summer, with The Harbourside Organic Market and the Kerr Street Market reopening for business. The fact that we can easily walk to both, makes it really hard for us to ever move from this neighbourhood. The cost, selection, produce, services, everything is great, we can't complain one iota. Sure, the weather was a bit of a mess, but who cares, it was great, and exciting, all at the same time. This is when summer really begins! On top of this blog, we will now be blogging here: http://oakvilleorganicmarket.wordpress.com If you have animals in your hou...

The Compassion Experiment: Words Put Into Action So, it's almost summer time, and it's getting damn hot. Damn, damn hot, to be exact. And you need a way to cool down, right? What's the first thing that comes to mind? Beer! Okay, no wait, this is supposed to be a blog about ice cream. Beer and ice cream! If FREE BEER is your thing, you need to be at Trafalgar Brewery, 1156 Speers Road, Oakville, Ontario, for their Father's Day BBQ. It is FREE and open to the public. Did I mention it was FREE?! And OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! You can learn more about it here: http://www.alesandmeads.com/ One of the most enjoyable treats known to man, has to be ice cream. Ice cream treats, ice cream novelties, ice cream floats, ice cream cake... But what happens if you are a Compassionate eater, like we are? That means: No Ice Cream!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO! So, you have to find alternatives. The easiest solution to the ice cream issue, is of course, the Freezie. Known worldwide for generations, Freezi...

"While visions of chipmunks danced in his head..." The Compassion Experiment: Words Put Into Action " Great site. I'll have to keep checking back ." M.W. Somedays I wake up, thinking: 'What the hell am I going to write about?' Today was one of those days. Until I tuned into The Star and was confronted by this: Smoked Meat Recalled Oh god, here we go again. If we ever need a reminder that eating meat is BAD for you, I'd say a headline like 'Smoked Meat Recalled' pretty much sums it up. If you don't eat meat, it's easy to see an article like that and go: 'Who gives a @#$%!, people who eat meat get what they deserve.' And this is true. Eating meat is gambling with your life, and your health. From movies and in articles, we've learned about families who have lost their children to E.Coli, and Listeria, and this is of course a gigantic tragedy, but the saddest part about these cases, is that they could have been avoided. Ho...

The Compassion Experiment: Words Put Into Action. It's nice to know you're not alone sometimes. In response to yesterday's rant: B says: "I love the blog today and the photo too - what a cool idea! Gotta get me one of those tubs...one day. Quite the rant you had on the blog, but it's all very very true. Yesterday during one of our quiet moments I had the realization that my life could have gone two ways. I have always liked nice things, and was to be honest, quite materialistic at one point in my life. I spent all my money on clothes and my hair, and fantasized about working part time if at all thanks to some rich, unknown husband. That could just as easily been have my path as what I have now. It scares me. OK, so now I have old clothes and crap hair, but I also have a lot of things I believe in like reducing waste and expenses and resources, eating organically and compassionately, giving back, and so on. I still struggle with my love of nice things, whic...

The Compassion Experiment: Words Put Into Action. Today's Parallel's 'Of Wisdom': "The mighty engine of marketing helped turn people's attention away from what they did and toward what they owned as the basic mechanism of self-definition. Over time personal pride became more associated with the status value of one's possessions than from one's work or contribution to society." Taken from NOWTOPIA. Some people stand for change, others just stand in line for the newest iPhone. B and I are watching the news, and they are doing an interview: "In order to truly experience the World Cup, you have to have one of these high definition TV's. Everything is shot in HD these day, and you just can't watch on one of those old, round screen TV's, you can't live without one of these..." Oh really? Because what the world needs is more TV's in the landfill, right? When I'm watching TV, I don't need to see the spinach in so...
