Dear Editor:

Dear Editor,
A friend of mine alerted me to the fact that your magazine's Holiday Gift Guide for 2010 includes a taxidermied piglet bank - made from a real piglet.

This is the most grotesque and disturbing thing that I have heard in some time. How do you justify this and rationalize that this should be considered one of the top gifts to give in 2010?

Animals endure enough suffering as it is - do you really think that
promoting this kind of gift is an ethical thing to do?

Animals should be treated with respect and compassion, and this most certainly does neither.

I expect that you will receive an onslaught of letters echoing my thoughts and I hope that you do the right thing and retract this immediately -
animals are not things, and they should not be treated as such.

Sincerely,

B

On Friday night, we attended our first ever, compassionate pot luck.
And it was AWESOME!!
Everything was tasty as hell, and we couldn't stop eating.
We brought Carrot and Ginger soup, and it was looted quite righteously.
There was so much food, I can't remember it all. Good thing we have this picture to remind us of all the food, and the good times.

This is what I remember eating: Canneloni with homemade Parmesan, Carrot and Ginger Soup, Tasty BBQ oven fried Tofu Bites, Homemade Falafel, Tabouli salad with Quinoa. There was Chocolate Cookies, Maple Flax Cookies, Caramel popcorn, Apple Cakes and Chocolate Cake, and the freshest, tastiest apple cider you've ever tasted!
Sound good?
The turnout was even better than expected, but I'm sure they'd love to have more people next time.
We'll let you know.
Thanks to SB for the invite.

With the holiday season now fully upon us, we we are hoping to spread the gospel of compassionate holiday expenditures.
We recommend people read Santa Claus - A Biography, by Gerry Rowler.
And watch What Would Jesus Buy? (see the trailer below).
Our gift giving this year, will consist of yummy compassionate baking, and slightly used, recycled gifts and books.
Hate to ruin the surprise, but we think that by giving slightly used, more thoughtful gifts, we can help keep the spirit of holiday giving alive within us.

I found this recipe at work!
TCE Macaroni Salad:

2 cups elbow macaroni
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup diced green peppers
1 cup celery
2 cloves of garlic
1/2 cup diced red onion
2 tbs dried parsley
3 tbs Veganaise
A tease of salt, a sneeze of pepper.

Cook macaroni in boiling salted water until tender.
Drain and rinse with cold water.
Drain again.
Place in bowl, add vegetable oil and toss.
Add the rest, mix well.
Chill and serve.

Have a great week, please keep sending in recipes, we love to eat!

  1. Thank you so much for that letter to the editor of Vancouver Magazine. I really think they were buried in hate mail over their "kind of a joke" as the owner of the site that sells it called it. Not funny! Your potluck looks amazing! I am definitely going to try that mac salad recipe, and I'll share it as well. I have a recipe for a yummy potato salad that I will share with you too. Happy to know you, keep up the compassionate work! OINK! (Guess who)
