The Compassion Experiment

Project Peanut I’m strolling through new holding, (this is the “newer” part, of the 76 year old animal shelter), and where most of the dogs reside, as they wait their turn to go up for adoptions, and catch up on their vaccinations, and spay/neuter. The dogs are up-in-arms about something. A new arrival, I assume. As I pass NH9, I see movement. NH9 and 10 have screens half-way up the steel door, for protective purposes, so I can’t really see the dog clearly. As I approach to kennel, he darts to the back of the kennel and has a panic attack, a total freak out. “It’s cool man,” I say, “take a chill”. Whatever the opposite of “chill” is, that’s what this dog was. Stay away from me! His posture spoke for him. I’m scared. “Don’t worry man, this is a good place.” How do I know that? “You just have to trust me.” But I don’t know who you are. “That’s fair, but I don’t know who you are either.” Good point. Stay away! He cowers in the corner. ...

Lisa from Ladybird Animal Sanctuary  asked if we could make a video of our 4 black kittens, to help them get adopted. "Sure, no problem!" was the response. Easier said then done! Here is the resulting video: These four kittens are fearless and peerless, so if you know anyone looking for a wonderful companion and playmate, look no further than these sweet litter mates. The funny thing about Warhol , is that for the longest time, we called him "Baby Girl", confusing him with Willow.  Turns out he is a super great cat, with a wonderful personality.  He is playful, and loves his brothers and sisters, but he also has a chill side, making him a wonderful companion.  Warhol is a smoke, meaning his undercoat is white, thus making him easily identifiable, though as mentioned before, we used to think he was a girl. Warhol  is great with the dog, the resident cats, his siblings, children, ...

"Sometimes the heart is bigger then the home." We chose to foster this family, because, if we didn't take them, they were slated to die. True story. How can you say 'No', to that? You can't save them all, that's always the sad part, but when everyone does a little bit, it can go a long way. Courtesy of Ladybird Animal Sanctuary , let us introduce, The W Family!! Wendy is very affectionate, and loves sitting in laps.  She is drawn to men, in particular, but loves the dog, and purrs like a machine, making her easy to fall in love with. Wembley , aka ' The Big Guy ', is one of the few cats we can easily identify, because, well, he's the big one. Rough and tumble, as you would expect, and healthy as an ox. He loves wrestling, the dog, and climbing. Good guy. Does Warhol look similar to Wembley ? Hell yes, could be the same cat, they all ...

Well, as unbelievable as it may seem to some, I did, in fact, win the 2012 Literary Arts Award !! Couldn't do it without the love and support of B, our families, all our amazing friends, and all the supporters of this crazy little experiment of ours. Thanks to the Oakville Beaver for helping us spread the word about this deeply tragic situation. Though it has been utterly uplifting to be a part of the process in helping all these deserving cats find happy homes, it has been downright heart wrenching to watch someone we know and love, go through so much pain, and so much loss. We are with Cindy, Maura and all the CARE cats, all the way to the end, and we hope you will be too! We made a video of 4 Amazing Cats, and promised to adopt one, but, well, they've all been adopted!! This weekend we will be helping to move more of the cats to Maura's, in an effort to help socialize and get them more acquainted with family living.
