Piebird Bed and Breakfast

Piebird Bed and Breakfast (Nipissing, ON)

Over the May 24 weekend, we had the utmost pleasure of spending two days and nights at Piebird Bed and Breakfast and Farmstay in Nipissing Ontario.
Piebird Bed and Breakfast and Farmstay is run by an amazing couple, Sherry and Yan, each filled with so much love, knowledge and openness, it was a pleasure to be in their company, and we are indebted to them in a big way.
We had heard of Piebird years ago at veg.ca, but had only now, found the time to make the trip.
The reason we chose this particular weekend, was to take their How To Grow Your Own Food - Gardening Workshop, something we badly needed because our gardens last year were a total disaster.
The How To Grow Your Own Food workshop was a mind-blowing experience, so much learning, and so much information, it was a little overwhelming, but the combination of expert knowledge and the hands-on learning, made it easy to retain all the input Yan relayed to us.
(Information that has already proven to be so useful to our gardens).
Sherry made some of the best vegan food we've ever eaten, and everything was straight from the garden, even the mint tea, which was awesome and ever so tasty.
Never thought I'd eat dandelion in this lifetime, but when fried in fresh garlic, it's damn good, and I even had two servings. Had two servings of the rhubarb/strawberry cake, the muffins and the yummy spelt cookies too, no crumb left behind.
The Gardening Workshop was attended by 12 people, including ourselves, and everyone had so many questions, it was great, (so much learning to do, and so little time). But it was time well spent, and we enjoyed being with everyone, because it's always nice to be in the company of like-minded folk.
The Piebird experience was more enjoyable and enlightening than we ever could have wished for and we didn't feel like guests, we felt like family.
Check out www.piebird.ca and see for yourself, just how amazing this place is, and how great Sherry and Yan are.

Our Top 6 Gardening Tips Gleaned From The Mind of Yan

1. Water only after first planting seeds and once when they start to grow/break through the ground

2.
Transplant plants horizontally with just the tip sticking up through the earth

3. Don’t throw anything away!  Use all pulled weeds etc. as mulch – and mulch, mulch, mulch – especially around planted seeds

4. Leave non-invasive weeds alone

5. Garden heroes like Comfrey are great from compost tea.

6. Leafy veggies grow in shade, below ground veggies grow in sun

The Piebird Goats, so cute and friendly.

This is what Piebird is all about.

Anyone want to race?

I like the chickens in the background, checking things out...

The chickens were pretty chilled out, they must know they are safe.
